William "Bill" McMillan

December 9, 1945 — January 4, 2024

DeFuniak Springs

William “Bill” McMillan passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 4, 2024.  He was born in Mobile, Alabama on December 9, 1945.  Bill served our country in the United States Air Force, and then went on to graduate from Auburn University with a degree in Psychology.  He also worked at the Kennedy Space Center in the early 1970s.

Being forever grateful for the loving care he received while spending his formative years in an Alabama Children’s Home, Bill knew he wanted to give that same love and care to other children in need, so he and Belinda became foster parents to 7 children over the years.

He was an avid fan of the Auburn Tigers and of the New Orleans Saints.  He was an ardent and very talented woodworker, and he created beautiful and special pieces that his family will treasure.

A great storyteller who loved to impart wisdom to the younger generation, his family and friends will forever remember the lessons he shared.  He was a lifelong learner and an enthusiastic reader.  He was a dependable mediator and the sensible one when it came to settling any argument.  His older sister Patsi always actually thought of him as the older sibling because of his calming presence and rational demeanor.

Bill loved his family deeply.  His children and grandchildren will always have the memory of him singing his special song to them – Peter, Paul and Mary’s “Lemon Tree,” and his family knew without any doubt that he would do anything for those he loved.  He will be greatly missed.

He is preceded in death by a sister, Carlene Roberts.

Bill is survived by his wife, Belinda C McMillan, sons Justin McMillan (Paige McNickle), Michael T. Fails (Rebecca), Christopher L. Fails, and Justin Martin (Christina), daughters Rebecca McMillan and Tracy Luckhardt, and grandchildren Alexia, Abigail, Addison, Olivia, and Alex Fails.  He is also survived by a brother, Mike McMillan and sister, Patsi Walters.

A family service will be held at a later date.
