SONJA F. GEOGHAGAN

November 11, 1943 — February 20, 2022

Our Lord and Savior called home our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Sonja Marie Figueroa Geoghagan, on February 20, 2022. Born November 11, 1943, in Baton Rouge, La to Cristino and Dorthy Figueroa, she grew up in Belle Glade, Florida and attended Belle Glade High School.  While at Belle Glade High School she received Best Dressed superlative and graduated in 1961. She then attended Florida State University where she met Buzz Geoghagan as a freshman and after dating for 18 months, Buzz and Sonja decided to marry at a ceremony on June 16th in Belle Glade FL.  She then moved to Harriman, Tenn. to begin their married life together and they were married for 49 years.  Her daughter Crista Lee Geoghagan was born on July 30,1964 and her son Randal Roy Geoghagan was born on September 4, 1967.  After years of raising children, she started working for the United States Postal Service as a mail clerk and spent 30 years in different roles like front window clerk, stamp store manager, interim Postmaster and ultimately retired as the Postmaster of Youngstown, Florida. She retired to Cape San Blas, Fla., where she enjoyed looking out over the water, reading her latest favorite novel and spoiling her children and grandchildren.  After a four years, Buzz and Sonja relocated to Santa Rosa Beach Florida and built a house in White Cliffs on Highway 30-A.  She was very active in their church, Seagrove Baptist Church, and enjoyed spending time with her Sunday School classmates as part of the group affectionately known as the “Lunch Bunch”.  Her biggest legacy, however, is the immeasurable mark she left on her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all of her loved ones. Everyone that knew her understood that her complete devotion to family was unparalleled and will have a positive impact in their lives forever. The Geoghagan family would like to recognize and thank all of the staff at Emerald Coast Hospice for their genuine kindness and support during her last days.

Sonja is survived by her daughter, Crista Lee Geoghagan, and her son, Randal Roy Geoghagan, and  his wife, Jennifer Temple Geoghagan; her  grandchildren, Chase Randal Hawkins and his wife Taylor Radick  Hawkins, Chelsea Marie Smith and  her husband Joshua Chad Smith,  Zella Addison Geoghagan, Temple Lee Geoghagan, and Blakely Margaret Geoghagan and her great grandchildren, Lyla Margaret Hawkins, Banks Robert Hawkins, Christian Howard Smith, Preston Chad Smith, Peighton Marie Smith and Presleigh Mac Smith.  Sonja devoted her life to setting a good example and providing them all a life full of hope, love and happiness.  Sonja is also survived by her sister, Patricia Ann Painter and brother-in-law Frank Kirksey Painter; and their two children Bryan Chris Painter and Susan Marie Painter.

Rather than floral arrangements, Sonja asked that memorials be made in her memory to Seagrove Baptist Church, 174 Watercolor Way Suite 103 PMB 288, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459.  A time of visitation will be Thursday, February 24th from 1 until 2 p.m. in Seagrove Baptist Church with the funeral beginning at 2 p.m. in the church with the Rev. Gary Wiggins officiating.  Burial will follow in the Geoghagan family plot in New Harmony Cemetery, 2281 County Highway 2A, Paxton, Fla.  Friends and family may go online to view obituaries, offer condolences and sign the guest register at jerryevansfuneralhome.com.
