Shirley Ann Ashe was born in Rosman, North Carolina on January 30, 1938 to parents Isaac and Lilly Holden. She moved to Florida after growing up in Rosman and has happily called DeFuniak Springs home ever since.  She passed away on June 17, 2026.

In recent years, Shirley was active at the Life Enrichment Senior Center in DeFuniak Springs, and she was one of their dedicated canasta players. She jumped at any opportunity to get to play cards with friends! She also loved square dancing, traveling with friends, listening to Bluegrass music, and sewing.

She was a strong and independent woman who loved her family immensely. Friends were viewed as family to Shirley - and she loved everyone so well. She enjoyed children and loved watching them laugh and play. Getting to babysitting throughout her years was something she always really looked forward to. She also loved to work with her hands. From farming and putting up vegetables to sewing and making quilts, Shirley enjoyed staying busy and working on projects.

Shirley leaves behind her son-in-law David Chandler, grandchildren Lisa Prater (Kevin), great-grandchildren Cierra Smith (Chris), Keaton Prater (Lexy), and Harley Whitman, and great-great-grandchildren Nova Smith and Harper Prater.

She is preceded in death by her daughter Connie Chandler, son Bradley Ashe, and parents Isaac Holden and Lilly Head Holden.

Shirley treasured the simple things in life. Though she grew up in North Carolina, she knew she was finally “home” when she moved to DeFuniak Springs. Her life and the model of living she leaves behind will not be forgotten.

The family would love for you to consider making a donation in Shirley’s memory to Emerald Coast Hospice of Crestview.
