Sammy J. McBroom

August 5, 1941 — August 30, 2023

DeFuniak Springs

Sam Josh McBroom, “Sammy”, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2023.  After a gift of remission, cancer returned a short while ago and, as Sammy referred to it, “that damn cancer” ultimately took his life.  Sammy was born in DeFuniak Springs on August 5, 1941, to parents Hildra and Artie Mitchem McBroom.  He attended Walton High School then enlisted with the army following graduation.  After his initial time served, Sammy took a job with the United States Postal Service in Atlanta, and he continued serving our country through the Army Reserve and the National Guard.

Sammy brought interesting conversation and good times with him everywhere he went.  He enjoyed fishing and talking about fishing.  He was an avid gun collector and loved shooting.  He  rarely missed a yard sale and he was a passionate collector of “fine junk”.  Discussions of and remnants of his fine junk will now be treasured by family and friends for years to come.  After fishing, guns, and treasure shopping, Sammy still found time to drive tractors and plant gardens.  He lived out one of his favorite quotes – “Feed a man and gain a friend” – as he proudly provided his homegrown vegetables to the Liberty Community year after year.

Sammy valued close relations with his family and friends.  His son, Steve, will always think of him as the best dad ever.  He did not miss family gatherings, and he did not let much time pass between conversations with family and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Hildra McBroom and Artie McBroom.

Sammy is survived by his sweet wife Vonnie Lee McBroom, two sons Stephen Josh McBroom and Timothy Eric McBroom, sisters-in-law Bonnie (Cary) Scott, Odelia Keaton, Doris McDonald, and Kay Dailey, and a brother-in-law Don (Diane) Brown.

In lieu of flowers, honor Sammy by feeding the needy.

A graveside service is being held on Friday, September 1, 2023 at 11AM at Cluster Springs Baptist Church. Services for Sammy are being handled by McDonald Family Funeral Home.
