Roy Daniel Wingo, Sr., United States Marine Corps, Retired, age 79 passed away in North Okaloosa Medical Center late Tuesday evening, March 2, 2021. He was born June 11, 1941 in Maben, Alabama, the son of Clarence Oliver Wingo, Sr. and Lucille Love Wingo. After high school, Roy joined the U.S. Marines at a young age, in fact he was aboard ship on his way to Viet Nam the day he turned 18. He and Ruby Juanita Blakenship were married in 1961. Roy went on to serve three tours of duty in Viet Nam before retiring after over twenty years of service to his country. Later after the death of his wife Roy eventually married his wife’s sister in April of 2009 and in 2013 Roy and Sylvia moved to the Mossy Head area of Walton County and made their home until his death Tuesday. In retirement, he loved fishing, and wood crafting and watching Westerns on television, the same things all ex-Marine’s enjoy. The children of the combined marriage, formerly first cousins became brothers and sisters and Aunt Sylvia became mom and Uncle Roy became dad. Roy is predeceased by his first wife and his daughter Darlene.
Among survivors are his wife, Sylvia Carol Blakenship Wingo; his children, Charles Wingo (Susan), Dea Hayes (Sonny), John Wingo (Norma), Jeanette Whitney, George Wingo, Bill Blakenship, Amy Blakenship; fifteen grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. His sisters-in-law, Lili Rose Sias, Millie Wingo, Janice Wingo and his brother-in-law Kenny Tackett (Nancy) also survive.
Memorials may be made in Roy Daniel Wingo, Sr.’s memory to favorite charities. The family will receive friends Friday, March 5, 2021 from 1 until 2 P.M. in Jerry Evans Chapel, with the funeral beginning at 2P.M. with Pastor Chuck Chapman and Pastor Darlene officiating. Interment will be Monday, March 8, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. in Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors.
