Biography

Mrs. Loretta Spears Mooney, age 77, a life long resident of Walton County, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2013, in Chautauqua Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born February 25, 1936 in Leonia as one of eight children of Hiram and Naomi Helms Spears. Loretta’s life as a child growing up during the depression was typical of depression era kids; she was familiar with hard work, honest values, and nurtured a strong sense of “family”. As a young teen she married a “local boy” Buel Mooney, a marriage that would span several decades. Together, she and her husband ventured into several businesses; pawn brokering, bail bonding and rental investments, Loretta was always by Buel’s side in each and every endeavor and all of those endeavors were successful because of one underlying principal, treating folks kindly and honestly. Loretta and Buel’s lives became complete with the birth of their daughter Cyndi. One of the happiest moments in Loretta’s life was on March 30th, when grandson D. J. was born. In the early morning hours of March 30th, years later, Loretta won her battle with sickness and pain with the full assurance that God always heals; not always on this side of Heaven, but He always heals. Just as she had been by her husband’s side in all the years of their business adventures, Buel for days upon days sat by Loretta’s side in the nursing home, never leaving her side until she left to claim the victory that is hers. The Mooney family has asked to express their sincere appreciation to the nurses and staff of Chautauqua Health and Rehabilitation Center for their love, their care and concern.

Among survivors are her husband Buel Mooney. Her daughter, Cyndi Mooney and fiance’ Mark. Her grandson, D. J. McCracken; her brother Stuart; her sisters Lucille, Corene, Ruth, Vivian and Lovelle and her sister-in-law Hazel and very special friends Bob Lindsey, David Chandler and Lila Clark who are more like family than friends.

She was preceeded in death by her sister, Flora Spears Miller and Janie Spears.

Those asked to serve as pallbearers are Bob Lindsey, David Chandler, Mark Crowe, D.J. McCracken, Steven Orlosky and Robbie Ignasiak.
