It was by chance when he had almost finished his studies at Chipola he attended a Walton High School basketball game where he met a student there, Helen Prescott who became his wife May 21, 1966. The Viet Nam Crisis was almost at its’ peak so rather than being drafted he joined the U.S. Army and served his country in Viet Nam. Because of his military service and his federal employment background he was able to get a job with the United States Postal Service where he worked for nearly twenty years until ill health forced his retirement. Jim loved fishing, and gardening and grew not only vegetables but beautiful flowers too. Always active, he coached all sports including teams at the YMCA. He was a member of the Lions Club and Henryville United Methodist Church in Guntersville. Jimmie was a die hard Auburn Fan and enjoyed sharing in the rich heritage of the University, but first and foremost in his life was his relationship with his Lord and Savior and his love for his wife, children and grandchildren. He is predeceased by his siblings, Bama, Bethel and Johnnie.

Among survivors are his wife, of over a half century, Helen Prescott Bartlett, His children, Greg Bartlett and wife Pam, Tonia Porter and husband James and Chanda Walker. His grandchildren, Hunter, Grayson, Ansley, Drew, Jaden, Alex, Rayleigh and Tyce. His sisters, Virginia Merritt and Eloise Roberts and his sister-in-law Ellen Beck and husband Willard also survive.
