J. D . "JAKE" SPEARS

December 17, 1931 — November 16, 2020

Mr. J. D. “Jake” Spears, age 88  a lifelong resident of Darlington passed away late Sunday night in Hartford Health Care.  He was born December 17, 1931 in Darlington the son of John W. Spears and Dovie L. Gainey Spears.  J.D. was employed with the Walton County Board of County Commissioners for 35 years and 8 months.

THE FOLLOWING WAS WRITTEN BY HIS NEPHEW, WILLIE FRANK SEWELL:  J.D.Spears  was also known as Jake Spears.  Family and friends called him Uncle Jake and others, J.D.  Uncle Jake really  loved the Lord.   He was a man of faith.  He talked a lot about wanting to leave this world and go and be with the Lord in Heaven.   He really enjoyed spending time and fellowship with his family.  He really enjoyed eating those Thanksgiving and Christmas meals with his family.  He never was one that ate many sweets because he said it wasn’t good for him but he would always make exceptions when there were cakes and pies on the table.  We would ask him and he would say, “just give me a little bit of all of it”.  One of his favorite foods was fish.  Instead of one plate, he would get two plates to go.  Uncle Jake had some hobbies that he enjoyed very much.  He always wanted to go to Sara Comander’s July 4th fireworks in DeFuniak Springs and he loved going to the Walton County Fair.  He loved going to gospel sings and listening to gospel music on the radio.  He was also a big sports fan of all sports especially baseball, softball and basketball.  He went to a lot of high school sports events his favorite being Ponce deLeon and Paxton basketball games.

Among survivors are his sister-in-law Shirley Spears.  His nieces, Lois Jean Jordan (Jessie), Mary Ann Sewell (Willie Frank), Juanita Jacobs (Chris), and Linda Cook.  His nephews, Zion Miller and Buddy Cook and numerous great nieces and nephews  also survive.

Floral arrangements are being accepted.  Due to the pandemic, a viewing and services will be held at Graveside in Limestone Cemetery, Thursday, November 19, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. with Reverends Terry Smith and Barry Joiner officiating.  J.D. will be laid to rest next to his wife Foye Spears.    Friends and family may go on line to view obituaries, offer condolences and sign the guest register at jerryevansfuneralhome.com
