EDNA MOORE SCONIERS

Mrs. Edna Sconiers, age 90 a lifelong resident of DeFuniak Springs passed away Sunday, December 26, 2021 at the home of her daughter surrounded by her family.  She was born September 15, 1931 the daughter of Edward and Mary McDonald Moore.  Edna’s father was run over and killed when Edna was very young so her mother raised her and her sister as a widowed single mom.  As Edna tells the story she and her mom and sister lived on one corner and a guy by the name of Ed Sconiers lived on the other corner.  Ed would come over and chop firewood for the widowed mom and Edna would always be busy around the wood pile when Ed would come over.  She attended Walton County Schools and worked for a time at Lightfoot’s Drug Store and later at Service Drugs.  Eventually, the time she spent loitering around the wood pile while Ed was busy chopping paid off and she and Ed were married, a union that would span some forty-four years, produce four children, eleven grandchildren, thirty three great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren in addition to literally thousands and thousands, if not millions of Pub Burgers.  You see, Ed and Edna took over the Tastee Freeze in 1963 after Ed, who at the time was the Lance Cookie Man, heard that Mr. King was ready to get out of the restaurant business.  Now a DeFuniak Springs Landmark, the hard work and dedication that Ed and Edna had begun together remains in the Sconier’s Family and is known far and wide for the same quality of food and service that has existed for three generations.  After Ed’s death on September 8,1993 Edna still remained semi active at the “Freeze”  but slowly began to transition away from the everyday routine.   At home, she finally had a chance to enjoy daytime television and soon became a fan of  Maury and Dr. Phil.  It is hard to believe, but according to the family Edna is known for her cooking skills for things other  than Pub Burgers, for instance, her chicken and rice cannot be duplicated, and there are other things like her cornbread dressing and her dumplings but her trademark dish remains her chicken and rice.   Finally in retirement she also had more time to read.  An avid reader of Christian topics deepened her love of her Lord and Savior.  All who knew Edna knew of her constant and abiding faith, her commitment to her husband and her family and her love for her friends, neighbors and fellowman.  Edna always minded her own business which made her the loveable wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and person she was.  She is predeceased by her husband Ed Sconiers, her son, Glen Sconiers, her sister Hazel Pope and two great grandchildren, Michael and Julian.

Among survivors are her children, Pat Thompson and husband Kenneth, Tim Sconiers and wife Debbie, Tommy Sconiers and wife Mary Jane.  Her grandchildren, Robin, Amy and Dennie, Stacey and Christopher, Steven and Tiffany, Emilee, Glen and Amanda, Josh and Amanda, Jed and Crystal, Thomas and Carla, Eric and Hilary and Rebecca.  Thirty three great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren, her daughter-in-law Colleen Sconiers and her brothers-in-law, Woodrow "Buck" Sconiers and Paul Sconiers also survive.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Edna Sconiers memory to the Alzheimers Association, 8180 Greensboro Drive, Suite 400, McLean, VA 22102.   Pallbearers will be Mrs. Sconier’s grandsons.  A time of visitation will be Wednesday from 10 until 11 A.M. at Jerry Evans Funeral Home under the West Portico.  In consideration of Covid, the entire facility (even though air conditioned)  will have all doors and windows opened and friends and family are welcome to stay in the chapel, the lobby, the adjoining state rooms or under the West Portico where the funeral service will take place with Brother Eric Bryan officiating at 11:00 A.M.   People planning to be under the Portico for the message are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or are welcomed to stand during the service of sit in the chapel.  A very large crowd is
expected and everyone will be accommodated and welcomed to sit or stand where they feel safest.   Burial will follow in the Sconiers Family Plot in Magnolia Cemetery.  Friends and family may go on line to view obituaries, offer condolences and sign the guest register at jerryevansfuneralhome.com.
