BISHOP HAROLD "Joe" SANDERS

June 7, 1923 — August 10, 2021

Mr. Joe Sanders, age 98 passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2021 in Twin Cities Hospital in Niceville.  He was born June 7, 1923 in Huntsville, Alabama the son of Jesse and Mabel Lee Ogletree Sanders.  After graduation from high school Joe entered college but soon discovered he was ready to get out into the work force.  World War II broke out and as a member of the United States Army  he was sent to the European Theater in June of 1943.
He was part of the regiment that took Anzio Beachhead on the Western Italian coast behind German lines.  After his tour of duty ended Joe got busy doing what he loved best…work.   He had a knack for investing and buying and selling and building and possessed an additional quality, “people skills”.  He had a genuine love for people and would go out of his way to help anyone.  Locally, most will remember Joe in his association with Twin Lakes Supermarket and Quality Western Wear.  God blessed him with good health and longevity and Joe, even into his later years took pleasure in working.  He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a 62 year member of DeFuniak  Masonic Lodge #170 F&AM and York Rite Bodies Chapter Commandery and Council.   The family expresses appreciation to the staff, nurses and caregivers of Stanley House Assisted Living for the compassionate and loving care Joe received while he was a resident.   Joe is preceded in death by his wife Rosella who passed away  May 27, 2011.

Among survivors are his daughters, Rosemary McHenry and husband James and Becky Hayles and husband Louie.  His grandchildren, Clay McHenry and wife Tina, Justin McHenry, Alexa McDonald and husband Keaton and Scott Hayles and wife Damaris.  Six great grandchildren, Kaeli, Kennedy, Aubrey Kate, Adley Rose, Ella and Emmeline, Joe’s sister Sybil Slay and his brother in law Jimmy Gay and wife Clara also survive.
