Barbara Herwig Jones, age 84 of Brookhaven, Georgia and Seagrove Beach, Florida passed away Friday, January 19, 2018 at her home in Seagrove Beach. She was born January 5, 1934 in Jacksonville, Texas, the daughter of Lee Conrad Herwig and Mary Elgie Circle Herwig. Barbara, a lifelong over achiever was a graduate of LSU where not only was a majorette but was also the place she met her future husband who also attended LSU and was a member of the band. When college graduation day arrived, she and Frank were married in the morning and graduated later that afternoon. Five children were born to their union, four girls and a boy. Their son Jai was interested in sports and Barbara became the ultimate “soccer mom” not only driving him to and from practice and the games but eventually ending up refereeing soccer and going on to becoming one of the first certified women referees. Barbara and Frank, after visiting relatives in the Seagrove area fell in love with the area and purchased property and built a summer home in the early sixties. After Frank’s death in 1993 Barbara has split her time between living in Brookhaven, where two of her grandchildren live and Seagrove Beach. In her eighties Barbara thought nothing of driving from Atlanta to Seagrove and thoroughly loved riding her mower and working in her yards. She is predeceased by her husband Frank Nathan Jones and her brother Roy Herwig.
Among survivors are her children, Jonquele, Jodi, Juliet and husband Kevin, Jai and Jennifer. Her grandchildren, Anjuli, Rebecca, Sarah, Jake and Josh. Her brother, Lee Conrad, Jr and wife Mary and her sister-in-law Elizabeth.
It was Barbara’s wish to be cremated and private family services will be held. Memorials may be made in Barbara Herwig Jones memory to Alaqua Animal Refuge, 914 Whitfield Road, Freeport, Florida 32439
