Anna Gwynn Kato, 75, was born on January 3, 1951, in Jacksonville, Florida, and passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at her home in Freeport, Florida, on October 25, 2026. Throughout her life, she called Jacksonville, Yulee, and Freeport, Florida, home. She was a member of Lannie Road Baptist Church.
Anna graduated from Ribault Senior High School and married the love of her life, John, in 1969. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, family, and cherished memories. Anna devoted herself to raising their three children—and, as the family lovingly jokes, raising John right alongside them! After more than five decades together, they shared a special understanding that often required only a glance or a single word.
A devoted mother, Anna tirelessly volunteered as a room mother, PTO officer, and team mom for numerous Little League teams. Her children treasure memories of summer walks to the public swimming pool for lessons, camping trips, and quiet moments resting their heads in her lap as she gently rubbed their heads. In those simple moments, she gave them a lifetime of comfort and security.
Among her fondest memories were the years she spent portraying Mrs. Claus alongside John as Santa Claus. Together, they volunteered with charitable organizations throughout Nassau County, rode fire trucks to visit children in local communities, and brought Christmas cheer to families at hospitals in Duval and Nassau counties.
Anna enjoyed fishing, caring for children, and spending time with family. She had a special fondness for animals, particularly her beloved dogs. Her gentle, giving spirit and genuine kindness made everyone around her feel welcome.
Anna is survived by her devoted husband, John Kato Sr.; her three children, John Kato Jr., Aaron Kato (Donna), and Stephanie K. Hill (David); her siblings, Margaret Asbury, Dan Kato (Beth), Jack Kato (Amanda), and Sunday Kato; her grandchildren Deleah Pickler (Justin), Genny Johns, Kara Kato, Logan Beardall, and Kassidy Hill; and her great-grandchildren Knox Pickler, Jax Turner, and Alton Turner.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather George Crause; grandmother Alma Crause; mother Ila Crause; brothers Tumpy Nall and Robert Kato; and beloved grandson Christian Kato.
Those closest to Anna will forever remember the way she said “John.” With just the right inflection, that one word could convey a hundred different messages, and somehow, John always understood. Equally unforgettable was the way she said, “I love you.” Anyone who heard those words knew she meant them with all her heart.
Anna’s legacy lives on in the family she nurtured, the children she delighted, and the countless lives she touched—and cookies. Her family will forever cherish her warmth, humor, gentle touch, and the beautiful memories she leaves behind.
She spent her life holding those she loved. Now, the memory of her love will forever hold them.
